The brands using AI to form their strategy are the ones who’ll lose. The brands using it to improve a strategy they already have are the ones who’ll succeed.
In action
01 Prove AI’s full value
The time AI saves is visible. The cost of review, correction, rework and risk is often not, and that’s where the real advantage gets decided.
Rebel move
Choose three high-value use cases. For each one, define the intended business outcome and baseline the current time, cost and quality. Include the cost of review, correction and rework any risk before deciding whether to scale.
02 Reinvest the capacity
Freed-up hours default to more output unless someone deliberately redirects them. Left on autopilot, the time AI hands back just feeds the same sea of sameness it was meant to help you escape.
Rebel move
Before scaling an AI use case, agree how the capacity it releases will be reinvested. Name one strategic priority – a bigger brand bet, a sharper story, a tougher business case – and protect time for it over the next month.
03 Set the operating model
Without clear rules and a shared owner, AI use can become inconsistent. Some teams over-rely on it, others avoid it out of fear, and decisions get made in silos: tech picks tools, legal reacts after the fact, brand finds out last.
Rebel move
Name the people responsible for AI decisions within the business – across brand, technology, legal and security. Then classify your five most common AI use cases as encouraged, requiring human approval, or restricted, and agree who can approve exceptions.
04 Protect facts and distinctiveness
When everyone has the same tools, sameness becomes the risk. It quietly erodes what makes a brand distinct and lets unverified claims slip into material work.
Rebel move
Add two checks to the next important brief or review.
1). Could only our organization have created this? And,
2). Can every material claim be traced to an approved source? Give a named person responsibility for final verification.
05 Become visible in AI-generated answers
People are increasingly meeting a brand through an AI-generated answer, not a search result or a site visit. Most organizations have no idea what that answer currently says, or why.
Rebel move
Work with comms and digital leads to identify ten questions your priority audiences might ask when researching your market or choosing a partner. Test them across leading AI systems, recording whether your brand appears and how it is described. Choose the most important evidence gap to close first.
06 Preserve human judgement and development
AI is beginning to absorb many of the foundational tasks junior staff traditionally learn from. This is the exact work that used to build judgment, craft and business understanding in the next generation of talent. Automate it away and you lose the pipeline, not just the task.
Rebel move
Select one junior role and identify which skills were previously developed through tasks now handled by AI. Create a new way to build those skills through supervised briefs, critique, shadowing or decision reviews.
